I believe the most troubling aspect of our culture that feminism cannot transcend is the allure that popular culture has on us as women. We obsessively deny our own self image while gazing at images of digitized perfection in print and in the media. And none of us is immune. My own passage of trying to make myself more beautiful, lose weight and deny the fact that I am aging, has brought me face to face with a cultural icon that does none of these things: Barbie. No one has succeeded in keeping her looks and refusing to age more than this injection molded piece of plastic. Her image however, has changed over the last 53 years. Instead of aging, she has become younger, with more mounds of blond hair than ever. Barbie - with premolded feet unable to stand unless wearing high heels. Barbie, with ever-lasting permanent makeup and the perfect body where nothing ever sags, bloats or cramps.
