Statement

Maria Wolfram was born in Espoo, Finland, and currently lives and works in Helsinki. She holds an MA Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art & Design, The University of London. In her multi disciplinary art practice Wolfram often builds large installations combining oil paintings on wooden panel with mixed media sculptures. Her recent sculptures are made of various materials such as feathers, stockings, felt, hair, women’s clothes and shoes. She plays with a hint of humor with feminine attributes, stereotypes and our common understandings of normality. Faced by philosophical questions Wolfram likes to confront and sometimes puzzle the viewer with the aim to raise conversations about identity, normality and femininity. Wolfram is influenced by artists like Marlene Dumas, Eva Hesse and Berlinde De Bruyckere. Since 2002 when Wolfram received her MA she has had over twenty solo exhibitions both in Finland and abroad for example in 2010 in Tel Aviv, Israel, curated by Orly Hoffman and in Raeren, Belgium spring 2014, curated by Benjamin Fleig. She has also taken part in numerous group exhibitions, biennials, Art Festivals and Art Fairs. Wolfram has received awards and scholarships both in Finland and in England. She is also an active member of the Finnish artist community and has had many positions of trust in Finnish Artists´ Associations and her artwork is documented in numerous catalogs. Her work is represented in art collections like The Finnish State Art Collection, The University at Åbo Academy, and The Finnish Lutheran Church.
